Start by building an understanding of your emissions and climate action opportunities, developing actionable targets accordingly.

This set of actions forms part of the Food and Beverage Manufacturing action checklist.

Key steps for SMEs to take

1. Build capacity
Build capacity around climate action opportunities, gaining necessary knowledge and sharing information internally.
2. Climate action plan
Develop a short-term climate action plan, ​starting with easier actions that can be taken in the near term.
3. Establish a baseline
Establish and quantify a company emissions inventory (Scope 1 and Scope 2) baseline.
4. Evaluate
Develop actionable ​(time frame & quantity/percentage) ​emissions reduction targets.
5. Develop targets
Evaluate, iterate, and advance scope and ambition of climate goals over time.

Examples of SME actions

Build your company’s capacity by having staff take SME-specific climate action courses and reading SME-specific guidance.
Use a carbon calculator to quantify your emissions and identify ​the activities that are the biggest emitters.   ​ 
When developing a short-term action plan include actions such as setting minimum internal standards for new equipment purchases relative to efficiency or creating goals for waste reduction. 
Set emissions reduction targets by making a public commitment and publicly reporting on your progress. 
When revisiting your climate action plan, set purchasing standards to achieve targets.
