1.2 Describe your business activities*

Clean Air is a UK specialist in fume cupboards and laboratory extract systems, which protect people by capturing and removing hazardous fumes, gases and vapours. For over 30 years, we’ve designed, manufactured, installed and maintained standard and bespoke systems for research, life sciences, education and industry. Our maintenance services help keep these systems operating safely and efficiently throughout their working lives. We’re also replacing SF6 tracer gas testing, where appropriate, with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling. SF6 is used to test whether fumes can escape from a cupboard, but it’s a potent greenhouse gas. CFD uses computer simulations to assess airflow and containment without releasing this gas.

Climate Solutions (optional)

5.1 Do any of your existing products and/or services qualify as climate solutions or enabling solutions?*

Have a carbon footprint that is at least 50% lower, than the relevant marketweighted average for the current products/services being replaced., Primary purpose of enabling others to reduce their emissions.

5.2 Please confirm your solutions meet all the following safeguard requirements.*

Does not support or extend the use of fossil fuel-based technologies, Does not cause serious harm to nature (e.g. water, wildlife, or ecosystems), Avoids major pollution, such as harmful chemicals or hazardous waste, Respects human and workers’ rights (e.g. fair pay, safe working conditions)

What percentage of your total revenue came from these products and/or services last year?*

0–10%

5.4 Provide descriptions/names of your solutions:*

Our CFD-based fume cupboard design and testing service uses computer simulations to assess airflow and containment, helping protect laboratory users while reducing the environmental impact of traditional testing. Conventional containment tests release SF6, a potent greenhouse gas, to measure whether fumes could escape. For suitable applications, CFD avoids these releases and reduces the need for repeated physical prototypes and development tests. We use this approach in product development, testing and consultancy, retaining physical testing wherever safety, standards or customer requirements demand it. We also offer energy-saving airflow controls, including variable air volume (VAV) systems and automatic sash closing. These reduce unnecessary extraction and the energy needed to heat or cool replacement laboratory air. Servicing, repairs and upgrades help customers keep existing equipment operating safely and efficiently for longer.

5.5 How did you assess whether these are climate solutions?*

Aligned with another framework (please describe)

5.5.1 Has any third party validated this?*

No

5.5.2 Specify any additional details*

We compare the testing that takes place using CFD to the corresponding tests in BS EN 14175-3. Most commonly, this is over 3t CO2e per test.

Governance, Strategy and Climate Risk (optional)

6.1 What governance processes do you have in place for your climate strategy? Choose as many as are applicable.*

Governance process in place, Person is responsible for climate strategy at board level

6.1 Explain*

-

6.1.1 Please describe their position and responsibility.*

Our Managing Director is the senior executive sponsor for our Sustainability Strategy, approving priorities, targets and material expenditure, resolving resource decisions and holding action owners accountable. Our Technical Director supports this role through oversight of CFD, SF6, product performance, safety and technical evidence.

6.1.2 Is this person (or another at executive and board level) also responsible for climate risk?*

Yes

6.1.3 Please describe the governance process in place*

Our cross-functional Environmental Committee meets quarterly to review six core sustainability measures, risks and priority actions, with named owners and deadlines. The Senior Leadership Team reviews our ESG Risk Register every two months, including changes and overdue actions. Our Sustainability Strategy is reviewed annually, with a formal mid-point review planned for 2028.

6.2 Have you started to identify and assess your companies climate risks and opportunities?*

Yes - we have identified both climate risks and opportunities

6.2.1 Where are the climate risks you've identified?*

Both operations and value chains

6.2.1 Explain*

-

6.2.2 How are you managing these climate risks? Choose as many as are applicable.*

We've started to prioritise climate risks, We've assessed these risks against revenue of the company, We've Integrated these adaptation plans into business practices

6.2.2 Explain*

-

6.2.3 Provide any additional comments or context on your climate risks:*

Our ESG Risk Register assigns each risk a rating, owner, controls and next action. Practical measures include solar generation, energy efficiency, supplier controls and assessing vehicle replacements against range, payload, charging and whole-life cost. We address barriers to CFD adoption through research, validation, standards participation and customer education, retaining physical testing where required. High risks, significant changes and missed critical actions are escalated to the Managing Director. Our highest-rated risk is slow understanding and recognition of CFD as an alternative to SF6 testing, which could delay environmental progress and returns on our investment. This also presents an opportunity to expand lower-impact engineering and consultancy services. Our annual climate-risk review considers site, energy, travel and key-supplier exposure, alongside changing customer requirements.

6.3 Have you integrated climate and/or nature into your company mission statement or shareholder agreements? If yes, describe how.*

No

-

6.4 Have you taken actions this year outside of your emissions to accelerate climate progress?*

Yes

We contribute to BSI, CEN and ISO standards work to support wider recognition of suitable alternatives to SF6 testing. We’ve shared our CFD methodology through peer-reviewed research and open publication without patenting it, enabling others to examine and adopt the approach. We also engage with MPs and government departments to encourage an appropriate industry transition away from SF6. Accredited CPD and participation in organisations including I2SL and My Green Lab help us share sustainable laboratory practices beyond our own business and customer base.

Results, Challenges and Outlook *

7.1 Provide any additional comments or context on your annual results and progress from previous years.*

We’ve continued to expand CFD modelling in fume cupboard design, development and customer testing, reducing reliance on SF6 while retaining physical testing where required. As a subsequent update, in 2026 CFD accounted for 19% of the fume cupboards we tested, almost twice our initial 10% target. Alongside this work, solar generation, energy efficiency measures and electric company cars support reductions in our operational emissions. Servicing, repair and retrofit help customers extend equipment life and improve efficiency. Our Sustainability Strategy 2026–2030 brings these activities together under measurable priorities and named responsibilities. We’re strengthening our carbon baseline and SF6 calculations, reporting avoided emissions separately from reductions in our own footprint.

7.2 Do you face any key challenges in reducing emissions?*

Balancing emission reductions with business growth, Complexities in managing supply chain emissions, Other challenges (please specify)

Specify other challenges*

Adoption of the new testing standard is slow from the CEN standards committee.

7.3 Has there been any third party validation of the data submitted in this report?*

No
