Climate Essentials recognises that it has a responsibility to the environment beyond legal and regulatory requirements. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral part of our business strategy and operating methods. Due to our enormous commitment to reduce global warming that we embedded as a core value of our business; we have pledged to halve our emissions by 2030 and become a net-zero company by 2040.

We currently rent our office in the co-working space so we have selected an operating lease for our accounting. Our office provider purchases electricity from Octopus Energy on a 100% renewable tariff, our portion of the bill for 2021 was £1464.

We have our own carbon management platform called Climate Essentials which is aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. This is our tool for calculating our emissions for the baseline year. Our methodology for measuring and reporting carbon emissions is based on the World Organisation Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) & World Resources Institute (WRI) Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Standard. We choose to quantify carbon emissions following this well-recognised and widely adopted standard to provide consistency and comparability, both amongst our users and against other organisations reporting carbon emissions.

Actions and plans to reduce emissions *

Scope 1 Actions

own facilities

Yes

Following our net-zero commitments, by the end of 2020, we moved our main office to a co-working space that uses 100% renewable electricity. In the future, we aim to use green gas to power our office heating as well. We also encourage employees to minimise energy and water use within our buildings in order to conserve supplies and minimise the consumption of natural resources. We only use LED lighting, and we encourage employees to switch off devices after work and during breaks to reduce phantom consumption.

purchased good and services

*

Yes

As much as possible, as a company, we encourage purchasing products and services that do the least damage to the environment. We have signed up for the Dorset Sustainable Palm Oil community organised by Chester Zoo, where we commit to not buy any products that contain Palm Oil for our premises. We are also part of the Low Carbon IT Manifesto where we commit to extending our phone contracts, extending the lifespan of our laptops, not leaving our computers on stand-by, reducing the number of emails sent, and reducing the environmental impact of videoconferencing by switching off the camera and using green cloud services providers.

waste in operation

*

Yes

Due to our lean operations, our waste production is minimal. To help reduce our waste generation even further, we have installed recycling bins across our offices and shared spaces. We encourage employees to reduce substantially the use of paper and printing in the office, as well as the purchases of single-use cutlery and non-recyclable plastic. In the future, we are planning to expand our waste recycling to organics by adding a composting bin which would go to anaerobic digestion.

business travel

*

Yes

As part of our net-zero strategy, we are encouraging our employees to use videoconference calls whenever possible and use more sustainable modes of transportation for events where travel is necessary (for example national or international rail, instead of domestic flights or car use).

employee commuting

*

Yes

We encourage employees to either cycle to work or use public transportation with a lower carbon impact (bus, underground, trains). We minimise the use of taxis and fossil-fuelled vehicles whenever possible.

Provide descriptions/names of your climate solutions:

*

Climate Essentials is the first carbon data collection and analysis platform that aggregates and shares data between the public and private sectors. Businesses within an ecosystem input their operational data on Climate Essentials for Business to calculate their carbon footprint and create net-zero reduction plans. Corresponding local authorities can then view this aggregated business data (including the reduction actions being prioritised) via Climate Essentials Analytics. This fills data gaps, creates knowledge sharing, and facilitates a standard method of carbon accounting for entire ecosystems. We are enabling local authorities to effectively incorporate businesses into their region-wide net-zero commitments.

Methodology used to assess these as climate solutions:

*

Climate Essentials uses the UK Government's (BEIS) carbon data and consumption-based emissions data produced by the University of Leeds (published by DEFRA). Calculations: cover all three scopes of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol; are measured as categories across energy, transport, products and services (including homeworking), and waste; and allow for estimations if data points are unavailable.
