That\u2019s why every year, our team at the SME Climate Hub surveys the companies across our community to better understand how and why they\u2019re taking climate action, and what barriers stand in the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/smeclimatehub.org\/the-sme-climate-hub-survey\">This year\u2019s survey<\/a>, which includes perspectives of 471 SMEs across 53 countries, demonstrates that small businesses are moving faster on climate than ever before. And critically, it reveals an important shift in <em>why <\/em>that bolsters the business case for climate action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainability is no longer optional\u2014it is a business necessity.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/smeclimatehub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-2-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-81417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smeclimatehub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-2-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/smeclimatehub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-2-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smeclimatehub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-2-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smeclimatehub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-2-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/smeclimatehub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Blog-2-1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A key takeaway from our 2025 survey is that SMEs are taking steps to green their businesses not just because it\u2019s the right thing to do, but because it\u2019s good for business. Let\u2019s unpack the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Respondents say that climate action helps them satisfy customers and grow their business by:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Meeting customer expectations: <\/strong>61% of SMEs report that customer demand drives their climate action\u2014up from 40% last year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gaining a competitive edge: <\/strong>58% of SMEs see sustainability as a key differentiator, a 12-point increase from 2024.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Attracting new customers<\/strong>: 51% of SMEs report gaining new business due to their efforts, up from 34% last year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SMEs also recognise that climate action helps mitigate risk by:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preparing for climate impacts: <\/strong>58% of SMEs say that climate action protects their business from climate-related threats, yet only 32% have begun defining specific risks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anticipating regulatory shifts: <\/strong>60% of SMEs cite compliance with current and future regulations as a motivator\u2014rising significantly from 37% in 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These results illustrate that SMEs aren\u2019t waiting for action\u2014they\u2019re leading it. Customers are pushing SMEs toward sustainability, and businesses that don\u2019t adapt risk losing out. At the same time, they require better financial and policy support to reach their full potential. We asked our SME community\u2014across industries and around the world\u2014to elaborate on their survey responses. Here\u2019s what SMEs have to say in their own words:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cClimate risks, such as supply chain disruptions, material shortages, and weather events, have a direct impact on our business decisions. We\u2019ve seen how changing climate patterns affect the availability of materials and increase logistical challenges, making it essential to build resilience into our operations.\u201d\u2014<em>Segura Ferreter\u00eda y Cerrajer\u00eda,&nbsp; Colombia<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cBeing transparent has positioned us as a leader in sustainable real estate development and management, attracting collaborations and media attention.\u201d \u2014<em>OXO, Indonesia&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWe have found that many businesses are daunted by the idea of calculating their carbon footprint. However, when we break it down, and they see that they can measure and reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in the short term, Scope 3 then becomes more manageable.\u201d \u2014<em>Sustainable Wedding Alliance, UK<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cSustainability isn&#8217;t just a goal for us\u2014it&#8217;s the foundation of how we operate and grow.
