The London-based venture capital fund Talis Capital is a small team of 16 people \u2014 but with over 55 portfolio companies around the world, their climate ambition has a larger impact than inside its own walls. Targeting net zero by 2030, the firm is already making substantial strides to meet these goals and is setting an example for their investment companies along the way. We recently spoke with Talis to discuss how climate action became a core part of their business \u2014\u202fboth within their own company and their portfolio \u2014\u202fand how the SME Climate Hub is driving forward their goals.  

What inspired your company to take climate action? Why do you think it’s important?\u202f<\/strong> 
As a venture capital\u202ffund, we have a unique opportunity to invest in the companies of the future.\u202fWe cannot ask our portfolio companies to build sustainable\u202fbusinesses if\u202fwe are not one ourselves.\u202fThe urgency of the climate crisis means that now is the time for effective and concrete action. We are working internally to reduce and mitigate the adverse consequences of climate\u202fchange and\u202fsupporting our portfolio companies to do the same.\u202f\u202f 
 
What role should small businesses play in the race to net zero?\u202f<\/strong> 
Small\u202fbusinesses\u202fare crucial in the race to net zero. Without mass mobilisation,\u202fwe cannot reach all corners of the industry\u202fand achieve the urgent need to decarbonise our economy.\u202fAchieving Net Zero requires the collective effort of businesses from all different\u202findustries.\u202f\u202f

How is your organization reducing emissions now?\u202fHow are these\u202factions enabling your company to be on track towards halving emissions by 2030? Please provide details such as percentage reductions, baseline year, and progress year on year if applicable.\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/strong> 
Over the last year, Talis has implemented several measures to reduce\u202four\u202femissions.\u202fWe are working to reduce our emissions from a 2019-2020 baseline\u202fof\u202f141.95\u202ftCo2e, although we recognise that\u202faudit of\u202four Scope 3\u202femissions has been limited.\u202fAs of 2020-2021 we have reduced our emissions by 50%\u202fon our 2019-2020 baseline\u202fto 70.53 tCo2e.\u202fIn the past year, we have\u202fimplemented\u202fa smart thermostat to\u202freduce heating and cooling costs when we are in the office. The past year has also seen\u202fTalis implement a homeworking policy, which enables employees to work from home two days a week. We\u202fhave seen strong uptake from our cycle to work scheme, where the majority of our employees walk or cycle to work.\u202fWe have also been using green energy for many years through Bulb.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are your plans for 2022 to further reduce your emissions?\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 2022 we plan to do a more in-depth understanding of Scope 3\u202femissions\u202fand investigate the emissions of investments, which we will expect will be\u202fa large part of our investments. We believe that these will make up the majority of our emissions.\u202fWe also plan to review\u202four purchase goods and services\u202fand implement a Sustainable Supplier policy.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When will your company meet net zero goals? How far along is the company now?\u202f<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In line with the SME Climate Hub, we\u202fhave\u202fcommitted to\u202fcutting\u202four carbon emission in half\u202fby 2030 and reach \u2018Net Zero\u2019 by 2050.\u202fAlthough we have already cut our emissions in half from our\u202f2019-2020 baseline, we\u202fanticipate\u202fthat the pandemic has skewed\u202four\u202f2020-2021 data\u202fdue to homeworking full-time and no business travel. With a more thorough review of our Scope 3\u202femissions,\u202fwe will be able to establish a better baseline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What support do you need to take robust climate action? What do you need from policy \/ government, multinational corporations, or even your customers?\u202f<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s vital that small firms get support on climate action. Particularly, measuring emissions and developing Net Zero\u202fstrategies\u202fcan be challenging for those that aren\u2019t experts on the subject matter.\u202fThe SME Climate Hub\u202fis a great tool for simplifying\u202fthe process towards Net Zero.\u202fSMEs need more\u202fadvice\u202fon what grants they are eligible for to help them transition towards making larger decisions surrounding climate action.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did your company join the SME Climate Hub? How has the initiative benefitted you in your climate action journey so far? How are you utilizing its tools and resources?\u202f<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u202fjoined the\u202fSME Climate Hub to\u202fmake a concrete commitment to climate action.\u202fIn addition, the resources on the SME Climate are very helpful in breaking down the topic\u202fand\u202fintroducing this topic to\u202fsome of our\u202fportfolio companies. Typically, it can be easy to be overwhelmed by all the different resources on\u202fmeasuring your carbon emissions and making a reduction strategy.\u202fThe SME Climate Hub breaks this down for those new to the topic in a digestible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice do you have for other small businesses within your industry aiming to start their climate journey?\u202f<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My advice to other small\u202fVC\/PE\u202finvestment funds would be to take the time to identify the steps to Net Zero for your business.\u202fDon\u2019t try to run before you can\u202fwalk.\u202fIn addition, don\u2019t be\u202fintimidated by the jargon\u202fsurrounding the Net Zero transition. Engage with experts,\u202fevents\u202fand resources on the SME Climate Hub\u202fto educate\u202fyourself to the steps to creating Net Zero policy and commitment. Most importantly, effect change within yourselves as a business and then engage your portfolio on this topic.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n
