Disastrous wildfires caused by climate change have displaced employees, severely damaged land and products, and made the small, family-owned business even more resolute to step up for the planet.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cWe\u2019ve seen firsthand that we must take action now to protect our community and our people for the future,\u201d says Clif Family Winery &amp; Farm President Linzi Gay.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The small-production wine and specialty food business owned by Clif Bar &amp; Company co-founders Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford turned these problems into a serious climate-action strategy. Clif Family Winery &amp; Farm joined the SME Climate Hub to make strides toward its emission reduction targets, with innovative solutions that have already yielded widespread results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/sEmneCw5iXOTVcYWXRFIf5Ombh242dR_Dqk63mCY6X8DQ3p_4s35zeUkez7XuwGp6eA88EoK0L9QGGQeIu0h1edW5SxIMTFAYSwWhh4Y_LNKwNFId4TEJ0OZPYS4-fDV2HS6xDAaJXZA44S2kifbZW_JBghWSdvHs-YoLfsFgmsgWAVUNuIeR2YNhA\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Climate action is ingrained in the brand ethos<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protecting the planet has been part of Clif Family Winery &amp; Farm\u2019s DNA since day one. Trees run on renewable energy, recycle all waste, and sustain and improve the places they grow.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With climate-conscious agricultural and business practices, Clif Family Winery &amp; Farm integrates this \u201cThink Like a Tree\u201d mindset across the company. This includes their 100% CCOF organic certification, Napa Green Vineyard certification, and recent SME Climate Hub commitment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/eNeRk8G3yfDMWx04Jpx4pX2ExYAWL7nR1aTHL05xBkRU-ixtpytyNxv85YOMmBLjpYCS2gZx3uwTyVM48DqtLj-wnt_homS2DJOh4Bjdld6UOR3Wj_iXicsY9DzX5oaInSIdxa-YWV6Wp6ZXnvJU2P3o_ICfKIQc0sOA6tc8MM-X-Z6M22T5sEA-FA\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Steps toward emission reductions<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gay says the SME Climate Hub tools like the Business Carbon Calculator have helped Clif Family Winery &amp; Farm hone in on their emissions sources, with critical accountability to meet those emission-reduction targets. At this stage, the company is focusing its efforts on reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve this, they\u2019ve generated several out-of-the-box strategies. The winery has enrolled in the not-for-profit electric provider MCE\u2019s 100% Deep Green Power initiative, a program through which the entirety of a company\u2019s supplied energy comes from non-polluting wind and solar power produced in California, and they have made key changes to their own operations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve installed solar panels on our new office and tasting room,\u201d says Gay. \u201cThis year, we also used sheep in the vineyard for weed control and fertilization.\u201d The latter is particularly important because, according to Gay, the company\u2019s main source of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions come from fuel used for the vineyard\u2019s vehicles and tractors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building a climate-action strategy also helped Clif Family Winery &amp; Farm uncover an innovative product line beloved by customers: Solar Grown Honey products.
