Five years ago, as the company began to scale innovation, its leadership recognized that as a manufacturer, its environmental impact did not end at the factory door. By embedding “sustainable ergonomics” directly into product design, Ergochair \u2013 an SME signatory of The Climate Pledge<\/a> \u2013 is changing the commercial furniture status quo. From eliminating landfill waste to re-thinking product design<\/a>, Ergochair proves that circular design and supply chain innovation are powerful engines for commercial growth.<\/p>\n\n\n

When, why and how was your business started?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ergochair was founded 24 years ago just outside of Bristol, UK by our original founders \u2013 two sisters. They recognized that every human body is built differently, so the chairs we sit on for hours each day should reflect that individuality. They began producing chairs designed around individual requirements. At the time, no other manufacturer besides us was doing custom ergonomic sizing. Early on, Ergochair worked closely with healthcare organizations like the National Health Service<\/a>. Five years ago, new leadership stepped in with a clear focus on scaling that original innovation to reach broader markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>When did climate action first become a priority for your business?  <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There was a growing daily recognition that as a manufacturer, we have the unique ability to influence the entire lifecycle of the products we put into the world. We looked at our full value chain and recognized that some of our chairs remain in active use for over 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of treating sustainability as a separate compliance project, we asked how environmental principles could directly inform our sourcing and product design. That was the birth of our “sustainable ergonomics” approach: embedding circularity into how we build products from day one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When making sustainability decisions as a business, we consider material selection and recycled content, product durability and repairability, component replacement rather than whole-chair replacement, and end-of-life recovery and recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n

What climate action steps have you taken across your products and supply chain?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whole-lifecycle design is our biggest focus. For example, our Intui chair<\/a> is built using 70% recycled materials, is 100% repairable and is 98% recyclable at the end of its life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>We also built an in-house circularity and take-back system. We collect old, used chairs directly from customers, refurbish them where possible and give them a second life \u2014 including donating refurbished seating to charities like a nearby children’s rehabilitation center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond recycled content, Ergochair is continually reviewing the materials and components used in its chairs. One example is the replacement of traditional plywood with an alternative board material, delivering a reported 58% reduction in carbon impact for that material, while also reducing costs. Further innovation includes the use of recycled PET components, recycled-content fabrics and alternative foam materials. Together, these changes demonstrate how sustainability can be embedded into everyday product development without compromising ergonomic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>What is the greatest challenge you face to reducing emissions?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Like most manufacturers, we know that our environmental impact doesn’t stop at our factory door. It\u2019s a massive challenge to take responsibility for what happens to a product at its end of life and gather verified data across a complex supply chain.\u00a0But supplier materials, transportation and product end-of-life create challenges because Ergochair does not have direct control over every stage. Many of our suppliers are learning right alongside us. Our day-to-day work involves constantly balancing high ergonomic performance and durability with smart, lower-carbon raw material choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By participating in The Climate Pledge Hubs at London and New York Climate Weeks, we realized that our responsibility goes beyond sourcing clean energy for our own warehouses. We must push this same accountability up and down our supply chain, ensuring that sustainability influences everything we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has joining The Climate Pledge (TCP) benefited your business?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For a UK business exporting internationally, we have learned a lot from being part of a global community. Attending TCP events has connected us directly with leaders at major corporations. We actually learned that some large businesses were already using our chairs after purchasing them previously through retailers without knowing our full company story. This allowed us to establish new direct sales channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being part of The Climate Pledge has opened opportunities to exchange ideas with sustainability leaders from global organizations, including Amazon and Unilever. These conversations have challenged us to think differently about supply chain transparency, materials innovation and how businesses of all sizes can accelerate meaningful change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a two-way street: we learn from what massive enterprises are doing, while showing smaller SMEs that they don’t need to be afraid of taking ambitious climate action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>You use carbon credits as part of your decarbonization strategy. How does that support your commercial case?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We view carbon credits as a helpful tool on a journey that has no finish line \u2014 never as a substitute for reducing our real-world impact. We source high-quality carbon credits through\u00a0Amazon\u2019s carbon credit service<\/a>, which is available to all Climate Pledge signatories. This allows us to address the residual operational emissions we cannot currently eliminate with existing technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our carbon credit portfolio spans three segments: To help address emissions in our value chain, we are investing in lower-carbon fuel inset credits, and for carbon neutralization, we are investing in superpollutant abatement and avoided deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Investing in independently assessed carbon credits allows us to support wider climate action while we continue to focus on reducing emissions within our own operations and supply chain. Transparency is important to us, and we see credits as one element of a broader sustainability strategy, rather than a replacement for meaningful emissions reductions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does climate action benefit your business commercially?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes! There are clear, direct financial benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Operational efficiency: Reduced material costs and waste.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Competitive differentiation: Helping dealers and customers meet sustainability requirements within procurement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Customer value: Durable, repairable products with a longer useful life and potentially lower lifetime costs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Smart sourcing and waste reduction improve overall operational efficiency. Through our chair take-back program alone, we\u2019ve diverted over 182 kilograms of waste from landfills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Product innovation also drives cost savings. We recently re-engineered a core chair component to completely replace traditional plywood \u2014 a staple in office seating. The new sustainable replacement material costs just one third of the price of plywood. By innovating at the component level directly, we lower production costs, differentiate our brand and better position ourselves to win competitive contracts outright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/a>You\u2019re committed to sending zero chairs to landfills. Why is landfill waste such a massive problem in your sector?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Across the office furniture industry, chairs can be replaced or discarded long before the end of their useful life. Often, components remain perfectly functional, but replacing the entire chair can appear easier than repairing or refurbishing it. We believe manufacturers have a responsibility to challenge this approach by designing products that can be maintained, repaired and recovered at the end of their working life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Our goal is to replace that linear “buy-use-dispose” model with true circularity. For materials like specialized chemicals or metals that we cannot process in-house, we partner with specialized recyclers to responsibly manage materials and components that cannot be processed in-house, with the aim of minimizing waste sent to landfill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/a>Do you have any advice for other small businesses starting their climate journeys?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Start with what you can influence right now! Don’t wait until you have every single answer \u2014 you never will, and you shouldn’t. Identify where your largest impacts sit and pursue practical, immediate changes. If you are a manufacturer, look beyond your facility’s energy use and examine the lifecycle of your actual products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Second, lean into community. Joining networks like The Climate Pledge shows you that even billion-dollar conglomerates face the exact same decarbonization hurdles you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Finally, never treat sustainability as a separate side project. It must permeate every operational decision you make; otherwise, it will inevitably fall off your business agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
