Sonnedix manages over 11 GW of solar, wind, and battery storage capacity across global markets. From their start, the company knew that they must apply the same environmental rigor to their internal operations as they do to their external products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since joining The Climate Pledge in 2021 and launching a formal Climate Transition Plan<\/a> in 2025, Sonnedix demonstrates how climate action can lower financing costs, build long-term trust, and accelerate systemic decarbonization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When, why, and how was your business started?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sonnedix was founded in 2009 by a small team of investment and entrepreneurship enthusiasts who saw the transformative potential of clean energy. We started by acquiring early solar projects, then developed and built assets on our own to expand into a broader energy mix across OECD markets across Europe \u2014 Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland, the UK, France \u2014 and beyond \u2014 operating in America through Sonnedix Chile and partnering with Sonnedix Japan, our trusted operator for investments made in Japan. Today, that small initial solar portfolio has evolved into a global renewables platform spanning solar, wind, and storage with over 11 GW of capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When did climate action become an internal priority for your business? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Because we are in the renewable energy business, driving the low-carbon transition has been part of our culture and mindset from the very beginning. We didn’t need to fight for internal buy-in because our team was already made up of passionate individuals dedicated to the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real shift was moving toward greater structure and data maturity. Joining The Climate Pledge in 2021 brought additional accountability, which culminated in the launch of our formal Climate Transition Plan in 2025. Today, we have an increasingly mature baseline across all three scopes and a clear roadmap driving our net-zero journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What steps have you taken to reduce your business’s emissions?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We look closely at Scope 1 and Scope 2 because those are within our direct operational influence. Our Scope 2 footprint was historically high due to electricity consumption at remote sites, so we prioritized procuring renewable electricity across our offices and assets. Between 2021 and 2025, we more than doubled our renewable electricity procurement from 29% to 71%, significantly dropping our market-based Scope 2 emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On average, Scope 3 represents over 90% of our total footprint. The embodied carbon in the solar modules and energy equipment we procure from Asian manufacturing hubs is our single largest challenge\u2014and our biggest opportunity. In 2025, we launched deep-dive supplier workshops to improve supply chain transparency and establish decarbonization pathways. Internally, we embed climate considerations into daily decision-making through global webinars, a cross-functional climate working group, and upgraded digital tools that enable more efficient monitoring and improved reporting. This year, we accelerated our digital transformation by deploying targeted digital and AI tools to optimize our processes and address operational excellence, including sustainability metrics..<\/p>\n\n\n

As a global renewable energy company, how do you communicate your internal sustainability efforts to clients and partners?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Historically, these conversations have been driven by customer due diligence questionnaires, procurement processes, and formal ESG reporting. While customers primarily look for competitively priced electricity, our ability to offer traceable, genuinely clean power serves as a major commercial differentiator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We use sustainability as an active trust-building tool. Demonstrating that we apply the exact same operational rigor to our own supply chain that we encourage across the wider sector strengthens long-term relationships, improves customer trust, and reinforces our risk management capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the greatest challenge you face to reducing emissions\u2014particularly regarding new technology like Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our biggest hurdle in Scope 3 is supply chain leverage. As an SME engaging massive global manufacturing conglomerates in Asia, influencing their decarbonization timelines can be tough. However, by consolidating our procurement and working alongside suppliers who are setting their own targets, we are making progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another major challenge is that carbon accounting methodologies for emerging technologies\u2014especially battery storage (BESS)\u2014are still evolving. Current standards often measure purely embodied emissions without adequately accounting for the wider system benefits BESS provides to grid stability and renewable integration. Frameworks like the GHG Protocol are actively working to address this, but navigating shifting goalposts and external market volatility creates uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has committing to The Climate Pledge and participating in the SME Cohort supported your journey?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Joining The Climate Pledge provided the momentum and external accountability we needed to deliver our 2025 Climate Transition Plan. The community aspect is vital, especially in today’s politically volatile environment. Systemic decarbonization can feel isolating but being in a room with peers going through the exact same Scope 3 and methodology challenges at The Climate Pledge Hub during London Climate Action Week was inspiring. It sparks practical innovation\u2014you hear how another company engages its supply chain and realize: we can propose a similar solution to our suppliers.<\/p>\n\n\n

What inspired you to launch the Sustainability Academy and educate children and young adults across the world on renewable energy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We realized our social impact was previously spread across too many small initiatives, so we decided to consolidate our efforts where our expertise lies: renewable energy and education. Tackling climate change is an educational challenge as much as a technological one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the Sustainability Academy, our engineers visit classrooms to teach students about clean energy, and we’ve deployed virtual platforms showcasing the workings of a solar plant in major venues like museums in the UK and Connecticut. We set an ambitious goal to reach one million young learners, and we are on track to hit that milestone in 2026\u2014four years ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does climate action benefit your business commercially?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond lowering operational costs through efficiency, there is a direct financial return. A substantial portion of our project and corporate financing is directly linked to sustainability performance metrics, meaning strong climate action directly lowers our interest rates and financing costs. It also enhances business resilience, opens doors at international forums, and satisfies the growing transparency demands of our lenders and investors.<\/p>\n\n\n

How has the ongoing energy crisis impacted your business?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The energy crisis highlighted that renewables are not just a climate solution\u2014they are a critical tool for building resilient businesses. While long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) were already standard for us, the crisis shifted our customer conversations to their concerns around energy security, price volatility and long-term cost. It proved that clean energy provides crucial long-term cost certainty during volatile market conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you have any advice for other small businesses starting out or advancing on their climate journeys?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don’t let the pursuit of perfection get in the way of progress! This is a daily reminder we have to give ourselves. Decarbonization is non-linear; data won’t always be perfect, external factors will cause setbacks, and year-over-year numbers will fluctuate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accept a degree of uncertainty, be transparent about what you don’t know yet, and focus on overall trajectory rather than perfect metrics. Finally, lean on peer networks. Sharing real-world challenges with a community facing the same issues is the fastest way to gain actionable insights and keep moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
